Washington, D.C. — The Center for American Progress will host an event featuring U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and U.S. Assistant Attorney General Jonathan Kanter. They will discuss the Biden-Harris administration's efforts to lower costs, promote fairer and more competitive markets, improve conditions for U.S. consumers and producers, and enhance the resilience of the domestic food supply chain.
The administration has employed an all-of-government approach to address the negative impacts of increasing market concentration on consumers, workers, small businesses, farmers, and the overall U.S. economy. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and other agencies within the White House Competition Council, has implemented several measures to achieve these objectives.
The agenda includes fostering fairer and more competitive markets through investments in processing and fertilizer capacity; modernizing and enforcing regulations against unfair, deceptive, and anticompetitive practices; and promoting transparency, market integrity, and appropriate use of intellectual property such as seeds.
Participants in the event include Laura Rodriguez, Vice President of Government Affairs at the Center for American Progress; Jonathan Kanter, U.S. Assistant Attorney General of Antitrust at the DOJ; Secretary Thomas J. Vilsack from the USDA; and Emily Gee, Senior Vice President of Inclusive Growth at the Center for American Progress.
The event is scheduled for June 25, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. EDT at 1333 H Street NW in Washington, D.C., with options to attend both in person or online.
