The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) law enforcement actions resulted in more than $324 million in refunds to consumers in 2023, the agency reported in its annual summary on refunds.

The FTC Annual Report on Refunds to Consumers provides a detailed breakdown of the total amount refunded by the FTC nationally and the amounts mailed to each state. The report includes a list of cases where the agency sent first distribution payments in 2023. Notably, the largest first distribution involved $99 million sent to consumers who were charged fees after attempting to cancel their Vonage phone plans.

In addition to statistics about each distribution in 2023, the report also contains information about how the FTC processes refunds and determines eligibility for refunds when there is money available for return to consumers.

The FTC offers interactive dashboards online with more detailed information about consumer refunds at ftc.gov/exploredata. These dashboards allow users to search for the number of refunds issued by state for each case and provide breakdowns of payment forms used for various cases.

The Federal Trade Commission works to promote competition and protect and educate consumers. "The FTC will never demand money, make threats, tell you to transfer money, or promise you a prize," according to an agency statement. More information on consumer topics can be found at consumer.ftc.gov, and fraud, scams, and bad business practices can be reported at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The public is encouraged to follow the FTC on social media, read consumer alerts and business blogs, and sign up for the latest news and alerts from the agency.
