Secretary Antony J. Blinken and Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer met at the State Department in Washington, D.C., on June 25, 2024.
In his opening remarks, Secretary Blinken welcomed Minister Zameer, highlighting the significance of the Maldives as a partner to the United States. "For us, the Maldives is an important partner, and we want to make sure that we’re a good partner to the Maldives," said Blinken. He emphasized their joint efforts in maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region and addressing climate change challenges. Blinken acknowledged the leadership role of the Maldives in climate initiatives and expressed hope for effective collaboration between both nations.
Blinken also stressed cooperation in ensuring maritime security and working towards building a prosperous future for both countries' citizens. "Very much appreciate you being here today so that we can not only continue this work but deepen it and continue to strengthen the partnership between the Maldives and the United States," he added.
Foreign Minister Zameer reciprocated with gratitude, expressing optimism about fostering a productive relationship with the U.S. "I bring greetings from the Maldives, the president and the people of Maldives," stated Zameer. He noted past high-level exchanges between their governments since taking office and looked forward to continued collaboration. "I’m confident that the challenges that we have in the future, we will be meeting together, and we will be able to overcome them," he concluded.
The meeting underscored mutual commitment to addressing regional issues and strengthening bilateral ties.
