Columbus is considering the installation of a security camera network to combat crime, but questions remain about its overall effectiveness. Jake Wiener, an attorney with the Electronic Privacy Information Center who works on the nonprofit’s surveillance oversight project, expressed skepticism about the initiative's potential impact.
"Just because these cameras may reduce crime where they are placed does not mean crime in a city will decrease overall," said Wiener.
The city's proposal aims to strategically place cameras in high-crime areas. However, concerns have been raised regarding privacy and whether such measures merely displace criminal activity rather than reducing it.
Further discussions and evaluations are expected as Columbus weighs the benefits and drawbacks of implementing this surveillance system.
