US voices concern over Hungary's "Defense of National Sovereignty Act

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The United States has expressed significant concern regarding the Hungarian government’s implementation of the “Defense of National Sovereignty Act.” The recently established “Sovereignty Protection Office” has taken actions that target civil society and independent media organizations.

Matthew Miller, Department Spokesperson, stated on June 27, 2024: “The Hungarian government’s attempt to harass, intimidate, and punish independent organizations runs counter to the principles of democratic governance rooted in the rule of law.”

According to Miller, this law imposes no limits on the entity's ability to target human rights and fundamental freedoms within Hungary. Additionally, it poses risks for any country, business entity, or individual engaging with these organizations.

The United States remains committed to advocating for the protection of civil society organizations and media freedom against such anti-democratic measures.
