The U.S. Department of State has announced the selection of 20 scholars for the fourth cohort of the Fulbright Arctic Initiative, an effort aimed at addressing security and sustainability in the Arctic region. This initiative is part of the broader Fulbright Program and focuses on topics such as climate change, Arctic resources, security and governance, and mental health and well-being. It aims to foster connections between people in the United States and other countries.
The new group of scholars, hailing from seven countries, will engage in an 18-month program building on the achievements of previous cohorts since 2015. These earlier groups have produced numerous publications, reports, and policy recommendations that have contributed to long-term Arctic security and sustainability. The participating countries include the United States, Canada, the Kingdom of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and the Kingdom of Sweden.
In addition to support from the U.S. Department of State, additional funding for this cohort has been provided by the governments of Canada, the Kingdom of Denmark, and Iceland.
Dr. Elizabeth Rink from Montana State University and Dr. Lill Rastad Bjørst from Aalborg University in Denmark will co-lead this cohort. Both are alumni of the initiative.
