Speaker Johnson: President Biden said 'he would veto our bill to prevent noncitizens from voting'

U.S. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson stated that Americans should be alarmed by President Biden's intention to veto a bill aimed at preventing noncitizens from voting. Johnson made this statement in a post on X on July 8.

"It should alarm every American citizen that the sitting President of the United States, who has opened our border to over 9 million illegals, just announced that he would veto our bill to prevent noncitizens from voting," said Johnson.

According to a press release, U.S. Representative for Texas Chip Roy and 49 other Representatives proposed the SAVE Act in May 2024. This legislation would require voters to prove their citizenship when registering to vote and mandate states to remove noncitizens from existing voter rolls.

The SAVE Act was passed in the House on July 10, according to a statement issued on X by Johnson. "Over the past four years, Joe Biden has welcomed millions upon millions of illegals into the country knowing that noncitizens only have to check a box to vote in federal elections," said Johnson's post. "We have long known this was an intentional effort to turn them into voters."

A statement of administration policy was sent to Rep. Roy and the co-sponsors of the SAVE Act by the Office of the President on July 8, prior to the passing of the legislation, according to Johnson's X post. "The Administration strongly opposes H.R. 8281," said the letter, justifying its disapproval by saying that it is already a "Federal crime" for noncitizens to vote in American elections.

Johnson has served as the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives since 2023, according to his website. He is also the U.S. Representative for Louisiana's Fourth Congressional District.
