The U.S. Department of Labor has announced that its Employee Benefits Security Administration is seeking nominations to fill five three-year vacancies on the Advisory Council on Employee Welfare and Pension Benefit Plans, known as the ERISA Advisory Council. The deadline for submissions is August 26, 2024.

The 15-member council provides advice on policies and regulations affecting employee benefit plans governed by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). Members serve staggered three-year terms and are appointed by the Secretary of Labor to represent specific groups and fields involved in employee benefits. The council meets at least four times a year and makes recommendations to the Secretary regarding functions carried out under ERISA.

Nominations are being accepted for one vacancy each in the fields of employee organizations, employers, the general public, actuarial counseling, and investment counseling. Interested individuals or organizations may nominate qualified candidates for membership.

Nominations should briefly describe the candidate's qualifications to serve on the council, specify the position (group or field) for which they are being nominated, and state that the candidate will accept appointment if offered. Nominations must also include the full name, work affiliation, mailing address, phone number, and email address of both the candidate and nominator. Submissions must be made by letter, resolution, or petition signed by either an individual or a representative of an organization making the recommendation.

Nominations should be sent to Council Executive Secretary George Pantazopoulos as email attachments to ERISAAdvisoryCouncil@dol.gov or by mail to U.S. Department of Labor, 200 Constitution Ave. NW, Suite N-5700, Washington, DC 20210.

Participation in council meetings typically requires a commitment of at least 20 days per year. Additional information about the ERISA Advisory Council and its appointment process can be found on its web page.

The Department of Labor emphasizes its commitment to equal opportunity in the workplace and aims for a broad-based and diverse council. Selection will focus on achieving significant impact, scope, and credibility among diverse stakeholders. This diversity includes but is not limited to race, gender, disability status, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
