In the early days of high-performance computing, major tech companies invested heavily in developing their own closed-source versions of Unix. It was initially hard to imagine any other approach could develop such advanced software. However, open-source Linux gained popularity because it allowed developers to modify its code and was more affordable. Over time, it became more advanced, secure, and supported by a broader ecosystem than any closed Unix system. Today, Linux is the industry standard for both cloud computing and mobile device operating systems.
"I believe that AI will develop in a similar way," said an industry expert. Currently, several tech companies are developing leading closed models, but open source is quickly closing the gap. Last year, Llama 2 was comparable to older generation models behind the frontier. This year, Llama 3 is competitive with the most advanced models and leading in some areas. Starting next year, future Llama models are expected to become the most advanced in the industry.
Today marks a significant step towards open-source AI becoming the industry standard with the release of Llama 3.1 405B, described as "the first frontier-level open source AI model," along with new and improved Llama 3.1 70B and 8B models. These models offer better cost/performance relative to closed models and are considered ideal for fine-tuning and distilling smaller models.
Beyond releasing these models, collaborations with companies like Amazon, Databricks, Nvidia, Groq, Scale.AI, Dell, Deloitte among others aim to grow the broader ecosystem supporting these advancements. The models will be available on all major clouds including AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), among others.
Meta has committed to open-source AI for several reasons:
1. Developers need to train and fine-tune their own models.
2. Organizations want control over their technology without being locked into a single vendor.
3. Data protection concerns necessitate running models locally.
4. Cost efficiency makes open-source solutions attractive.

The company believes that by not locking into competitors' ecosystems or selling access to AI models as their primary business model allows them to invest freely in research without undercutting revenue or sustainability.
Open source has historically provided benefits through transparency and security which are expected to apply similarly within AI development frameworks like Llama Guard.

"My framework for understanding safety is that we need to protect against two categories of harm: unintentional and intentional," stated an expert from Meta.
Unintentional harm includes inadvertent negative impacts while intentional harm involves deliberate misuse by bad actors—both areas where transparency offered by open-source can mitigate risks effectively through community scrutiny.
