Secretary Antony J. Blinken addressed the press on July 23, 2024, responding to questions about President Biden’s decision not to seek a second term and Vice President Harris's potential as a replacement.
Blinken expressed his admiration for President Biden, highlighting the challenges faced when he took office, including significant health, economic, and democratic crises. He praised Biden’s leadership in addressing these issues through investments such as the infrastructure bill, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act. "Adversaries who thought that we couldn’t get our act together at home – he’s demonstrated exactly the contrary," Blinken said.
He emphasized the U.S.'s strong economic performance under Biden's administration, noting record low unemployment rates and substantial foreign direct investment. Blinken also commended Biden's efforts in strengthening international alliances and partnerships.
Discussing Biden's focus for his remaining term, Blinken mentioned ongoing efforts in the Middle East, Ukraine, and the Indo-Pacific region. "He’s determined to continue that work, and I’m determined to continue it with him," Blinken stated.
When asked about Vice President Harris as a potential successor, Blinken refrained from engaging in political discussions but shared his observations of her capabilities. He described Harris as a commanding presence in international forums and a leading voice in American foreign policy. "In each and every one of these areas, she’s been a leading voice in our administration," he noted.
Blinken dismissed concerns about Harris lacking foreign policy expertise: "What I’ve seen is someone who is already deeply experienced and very effective around the world." He cited her involvement in various global initiatives and leadership roles as evidence of her proficiency.
The briefing concluded with Blinken affirming Harris's capability and effectiveness in handling critical foreign policy issues.
