FTC and DOJ announce first public strike force meeting on pricing

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) will virtually cohost the first public meeting of the Strike Force on Unfair and Illegal Pricing on Thursday, August 1, 2024. The event aims to discuss enforcement actions taken to lower prices for Americans.

The meeting will start with an open-press session featuring remarks by FTC Chair Lina M. Khan, Associate Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer, Assistant Attorney General for the Antitrust Division Jonathan S. Kanter, and Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division Brian M. Boynton. Senior officials from other agencies will also provide remarks. Following this, a closed-door discussion of enforcement-related matters will take place.

The open session is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. ET. The agenda for this portion of the event will be available on the FTC’s website prior to the meeting, along with a link to view the virtual event.

In March 2024, during the sixth meeting of the White House Competition Council, President Biden announced the launch of this Strike Force to enhance interagency efforts against illegal corporate practices that increase prices through anti-competitive, unfair, deceptive, or fraudulent business activities.

Members of the Strike Force include several federal agencies such as the Department of Agriculture, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Transportation, Securities and Exchange Commission, Federal Communications Commission, and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

The FTC's mission includes promoting competition while protecting and educating consumers.
