Meta has reached a $1.4 billion settlement with the state of Texas over privacy violations, The New York Times reported on July 30, 2024.
Alan Butler, the executive director of the nonprofit privacy advocacy research group Electronic Privacy Information Center, commented on the significance of this settlement. “It is a recognition of the growing risks and threats posed by breaches and by unauthorized collection and use of sensitive data,” he said. Butler added, “I don’t think in 2011 that Facebook users had any idea that this capability existed.”
Further details about the settlement can be found in The New York Times article.
