Washington, D.C. — A new analysis from the Center for American Progress (CAP) reveals that House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) has issued at least 91 subpoenas, despite defying a 2022 subpoena issued to him by the House Committee investigating the January 6th attack on the Capitol.
The column details how Jordan has utilized his leadership position to initiate oversight investigations, which have allegedly cost $20 million in taxpayer resources without addressing issues that could benefit everyday Americans.
“Instead of being held accountable for defying a lawful subpoena issued to him, Jim Jordan has issued almost 100 subpoenas to others,” said Michael Sozan, senior fellow at CAP and co-author of the analysis. “He’s created an antidemocratic, two-tiered system of justice. Jordan’s actions bring disrepute to the House and ultimately diminish people’s trust in government. Americans deserve better, and the House must—at the first feasible time—hold him accountable.”
The January 6th Committee had issued a subpoena to Rep. Jordan concerning his significant role in efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Jordan refused to comply with this subpoena. In its final report, the January 6th Committee referred Jordan to the House Ethics Committee for appropriate punishment for flouting House rules.
After Republicans gained a majority in January 2023, Republican leadership appointed Jordan as chairman of both the House Judiciary Committee and its newly formed Weaponization Subcommittee. Since then, Jordan has conducted various investigations targeting President Joe Biden, law enforcement entities, and nonprofit organizations focused on mitigating harmful election-related disinformation; he has issued at least 91 subpoenas during these investigations.
