Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Uzra Zeya will travel to Nairobi, Kenya, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from August 4-8, 2024. The purpose of the trip is to engage on human rights, democratic governance, and humanitarian cooperation.
In Kenya, Under Secretary Zeya will meet with senior government officials, civil society representatives, and U.S. exchange alumni. The focus will be on strengthening the rule of law, championing anti-corruption efforts, and advancing government accountability. She will also address shared solutions to regional and global challenges while underscoring the importance of freedoms of peaceful assembly and expression. Additionally, she will emphasize U.S. support for democratic reforms and refugee inclusion.
In Ethiopia, Under Secretary Zeya plans to engage leaders from the Ethiopian government, African Union, and civil society on protecting human rights throughout Ethiopia. Discussions will also cover the importance of inclusive and transparent transitional justice as well as advancing protections for refugees, displaced persons, and humanitarian workers. Furthermore, she will visit a refugee center that provides child protection services along with education and health care to highlight U.S. partnerships in supporting refugees and host communities. The United States remains the single largest donor of humanitarian assistance to Ethiopia.
