Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Countering Foreign State Information Manipulation and a Joint Communiqué on the U.S.-Australia Landsat Next 2030 International Partnership Initiative in Washington, D.C., on August 5, 2024.

During the event, Secretary Blinken addressed the ongoing Middle East situation, emphasizing the need for de-escalation and a ceasefire in Gaza to prevent further conflict and violence. "All parties must refrain from escalation," he stated. "It is urgent that all parties make the right choices in the hours and days ahead."

Blinken highlighted two key agreements with Australia. The first agreement pertains to the Landsat Next 2030 International Partnership Initiative, which aims to advance environmental monitoring and resource exploration through satellite technology. He noted Australia's critical role in providing infrastructure, personnel, services, and scientific support for this mission.

The second agreement focuses on combating misinformation and disinformation through an MOU on Combating State Information Manipulation. This partnership will enhance cooperation between the United States and Australia in identifying and countering foreign state information manipulation. "Australia is now the 20th country to sign an agreement with us," Blinken said.

Foreign Minister Wong echoed Blinken's sentiments regarding the Middle East conflict, supporting calls for de-escalation and endorsing President Biden's proposed ceasefire plan backed by the UN Security Council.

Wong also underscored the significance of U.S.-Australia relations, describing their alliance as more than historical or traditional but as a living expression of shared values between two robust democracies. She emphasized their mutual commitment to protecting political systems against foreign interference.

Both officials expressed anticipation for further discussions at AUSMIN talks scheduled for the following day.

The signing ceremony concluded with acknowledgments from both leaders about their continued collaboration across various domains including technological cooperation through Landsat Next and resilience-building against disinformation threats.
