The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources have proposed a cleanup plan to address PCB-contaminated soil and sediment at Cedar Creek Operable Unit 2B, part of the Cedar Creek Superfund alternative site in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. The proposal will be open for public comment until September 12.
The EPA’s preferred cleanup plan includes removing PCB-contaminated material from floodplain soil and in-water sediment deposits, backfilling and restoring excavated areas, installing a six-inch residual sand cover following the removal of in-water sediment deposits, and implementing a long-term monitoring program to track decreasing PCB concentrations in fish tissue.
Additionally, the proposed plan considers a no-action alternative since a previous cleanup completed in 2018 met all cleanup objectives.
A public meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 29 at 6 p.m. at Cedarburg City Hall, W63 N645 Washington Ave. During this meeting, the EPA will present details about the cleanup plan followed by a question-and-answer session. Formal comments from the public will also be accepted.
Residents can submit their comments online via EPA’s Cedar Creek website or by mail to Ruth Muhtsun, EPA’s community involvement coordinator, at 77 W Jackson Street RE-19J, Chicago, IL 60604. Comments must be received or postmarked by September 12.
