CHICAGO - (August 16, 2024) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today that arsenic cleanup is complete at three of the remaining four properties that are part of the South Minneapolis Residential Soil Contamination Superfund site. Consequently, these properties have been deleted from the National Priorities List, which identifies the most contaminated sites in the nation.

The 1,480-acre site is located near a former pesticide manufacturing plant. During its operations, arsenic trioxide was periodically dispersed into the Phillips, Longfellow, and Powderhorn neighborhoods in south Minneapolis, resulting in soil contamination. The EPA has previously completed investigations and soil cleanups for more than 3,600 residential properties in the area and removed them from the NPL. One remaining property has been partially cleaned up but will stay on the list until cleanup is complete or institutional controls are implemented.

The EPA deletes sites or parts of sites from the NPL when no further cleanup is required to protect human health or the environment.
