The U.S. Department of Labor has announced an initial award of $2 million in emergency grant funding to Texas. This allocation aims to support employment and training for workers involved in cleanup and recovery activities across 67 counties impacted by Hurricane Beryl.
Hurricane Beryl made landfall on July 8, 2024, as a Category 1 hurricane near Matagorda. The following day, the Federal Emergency Management Agency issued a major disaster declaration, enabling the state to request federal assistance for recovery efforts in the affected counties.
The National Dislocated Worker Grant, administered by the department’s Employment and Training Administration, provides up to $16,093,393. This grant allows the Texas Workforce Commission to offer temporary cleanup and recovery jobs while also providing training and services to those in the impacted communities.
Dislocated Worker Grants are supported by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014. They aim to expand the service capacity of dislocated worker programs at both state and local levels by offering financial assistance in response to significant economic events that result in substantial job losses.
