The United States is intensifying its sanctions campaign against Russia, imposing new measures on nearly 400 entities and individuals supporting Russia's war against Ukraine. This announcement comes one day before Ukrainian Independence Day.
The Department of State is focusing on those involved in sanctions evasion and circumvention, including entities in the People's Republic of China and those aiding Russia’s future energy production and exports. Sanctions are also being imposed on entities and individuals in Russia and Belarus involved in the production of military equipment such as unmanned aerial vehicles, missiles, fighter aircraft, armored vehicles, defense electronics, and munitions.
"We are also continuing to sanction those involved in the attempted ‘Russification’ and ‘re-education’ of Ukraine’s children," a statement from the Department reads.
Simultaneously, the Department of the Treasury is targeting those facilitating support for Russia’s military-industrial base. This includes designating individuals involved in sanctions evasion on behalf of Russian oligarchs and malign cyber actors. The Treasury is also disrupting software and IT solutions critical to Russia’s financial sector. Additionally, the Department of Commerce is adding over a hundred entries to its Entity List for shipping U.S.-origin items to Russia against U.S. export controls.
"We will continue to use all available tools to hinder Russia’s use of the international financial system to wage its war of aggression," stated an official source. "We aim to ensure Putin’s invasion ends in strategic failure."
These actions were taken under Executive Order 14024, “Blocking Property With Respect To Specified Harmful Foreign Activities of the Government of the Russian Federation,” as amended.
