Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves delivered remarks in Lake City, South Carolina, announcing a significant milestone for disaster relief in the state. Graves expressed gratitude to Mayor Robinson and Administrator Hall for their welcome and highlighted the presence of Congressman Clyburn.
Graves acknowledged the frequent extreme weather events affecting South Carolina and emphasized the importance of robust disaster relief resources. He stated, "President Biden and Vice President Harris understand that when we protect our communities from the impact of natural disasters and shore up their recovery capabilities, we foster stronger economies, mitigate devastation, and save lives."
The Economic Development Administration (EDA) has awarded a $13.5 million grant to Lake City for water infrastructure improvements aimed at supporting local businesses. The grant is expected to alleviate flooding, reducing structural and economic damage. This investment will be matched with $1.3 million in local funds.
Graves noted that this project is part of broader efforts championed by leaders like Congressman Clyburn, resulting in nearly half a billion dollars allocated to EDA for disaster relief and recovery. He mentioned Hurricane Debby as a recent example of extreme weather highlighting the need for such investments.
He reiterated the Biden-Harris Administration's commitment to not only rebuilding but also promoting economic growth and opportunity nationwide. "We’re creating an economy where your zip code doesn’t determine your destiny," Graves said.
Additionally, he highlighted programs like EDA’s Tech Hub and Recompete Programs designed to ensure equitable economic benefits across all communities. The Internet for All Initiative was also mentioned as a means to provide reliable high-speed internet access nationwide.
Graves concluded by expressing optimism about the positive impact these resources would have on Lake City and South Carolina as a whole, emphasizing ongoing collaboration with Congressman Clyburn and other state leaders.
