In support of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America agenda, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced nearly $62 million for 20 projects across 15 states to advance clean hydrogen technologies. These projects aim to enhance hydrogen fueling infrastructure, develop hydrogen-powered container-handling equipment for ports, and improve processes for deploying hydrogen technologies equitably.

“Under President Biden and Vice President Harris, America is leading the world in the development and deployment of clean hydrogen—a versatile fuel critical to reducing emissions from the most energy-intensive and polluting sectors of our economy,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. “Today’s announcement builds on the historic clean hydrogen investments made possible by the Investing in America agenda and will help deliver new economic opportunities across the nation while also reinforcing America’s global leadership in clean energy technologies for generations to come.”

The initiative supports a vision for an affordable clean hydrogen economy that creates high-quality jobs while addressing climate challenges. This vision is part of the U.S. National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap, coordinated by the Hydrogen Interagency Task Force. The DOE Hydrogen Program will manage these projects as part of its broader portfolio.

Clean hydrogen serves as a flexible energy carrier and is crucial for various chemical processes like fertilizer production and steelmaking. It can be produced from diverse domestic resources including renewables, nuclear, and fossil fuels with carbon capture. Its application could significantly reduce emissions from hard-to-decarbonize sectors such as industrial processes and heavy-duty transportation.

The selected projects fall into five categories:

1. Components for Hydrogen Fueling of Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles: Four projects totaling $8.5 million.

2. Standardized Hydrogen Refueling Station of the Future: Four projects totaling $40 million.

3. Hydrogen Fuel Cell-Powered Port Equipment: One project totaling $2.5 million.

4. Enabling Permitting and Safety for Hydrogen Deployment: Seven projects totaling $7 million.

5. Equitable Hydrogen Technology Community Engagement: Four projects totaling $4 million.

These initiatives align with priorities set by the Hydrogen Interagency Task Force’s working groups on infrastructure, siting, permitting, workforce equity, and justice.

As part of efforts to build an inclusive clean energy future, all selected projects are expected to implement comprehensive Community Benefits Plans (CBPs). Over $14 million is dedicated to community benefits under the Justice40 initiative, involving over 20 minority-serving institutions as partners.

Selection does not guarantee funding; DOE will negotiate terms before issuing awards or providing funds.
