The United States and the Republic of Cyprus have underscored the importance of stability and security in Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean through a new defense cooperation agreement. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and the Republic of Cyprus Ministry of Defence (MOD) signed a Roadmap for Bilateral Defense Cooperation Efforts, which will span from 2024 to 2029.
The roadmap aims to enhance response capabilities to humanitarian crises and address key security concerns such as climate change's national security effects, countering malign influence, and building interoperability between military forces. This initiative seeks to promote stability, security, and prosperity in the region.
"The complexity and evolving nature of security challenges in this region mandates vigilance, engagement, and close cooperation on defense and security issues between like-minded partners," stated representatives from both nations.
The agreement is seen as an opportunity for both countries to support mutually beneficial policy objectives in the Eastern Mediterranean.
