Former DEA agent: the cartels and China ‘will continue to take advantage of the USA open border’

Derek Maltz Sr., former Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) director, said that Mexican drug cartels and China will continue their "deadly operations" by exploiting the open border. Maltz shared his statement in a Sept. 2 post on X.

"The Mexican cartels built up solid relationships many years ago with the Chinese criminal networks,” Maltz said. "They have expanded their deadly operations and will continue to take advantage of the USA open border and soft on crime policies. It's sad to see Americans dying at a historic level and there is still no sense of urgency! Where is the outrage as we have witness[ed] families and communities being devastated all over the country!!"

During his appearance on Joe Hoft’s radio show, Maltz discussed the longstanding relationships between Mexican drug cartels and China. According to a video clip posted by Maltz on X, he said that the Chinese have provided the cartels with precursor chemicals necessary to produce methamphetamine for years. However, in 2012, they turned their focus to fentanyl.

According to the video clip from X, Maltz emphasized that "We’re not talking now just about fentanyl." He referenced xylazine, a horse tranquilizer being mixed with fentanyl among other potent chemicals.

AP News reported in 2023 that xylazine causes users to become lethargic and occasionally black out. It leads to breathing issues and heart rate decline. It also causes severe skin wounds, such as ulcers and abscesses, which has led to amputations.

"The bottom line is we have the worst crisis in American history, destroying our future generation with poisonous chemicals coming in from China, coming in from Mexico," Maltz said on X. He added that this is not the same crisis of illegal drugs that the U.S. has experienced in the past. "We are talking about a deliberate attack against America from the CCP," he said.

Maltz is currently working for PenLink Ltd. as the Executive Director of Government Relations, according to the Border911 website. He is also a team member of Border911, a non-profit organization composed of border security experts aiming to educate Americans about the border crisis. Previously, he was the director of the DEA’s Special Operations Division and served the DEA for 28 years. He continues to appear on news broadcasts, podcasts, and testifies before Congress as an expert on border issues.
