Today, global tech trade association ITI released a statement from its President and CEO Jason Oxman in response to the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR)’s announcement on Section 301 tariffs.

“The Biden Administration pledged to implement a comprehensive, strategic, and multilateral approach to China that benefits the U.S. economy, U.S. workers, and the supply chain. Instead, it has repeatedly dismissed industry concerns regarding economic impacts and supply chain resilience in favor of more tariffs. Today’s announcement to increase tariffs on certain semiconductors and components, effective January 1, 2025, will cause more disruption and instability in global supply chains. While we understand that the machinery exclusion process will be detailed in a separate notice, it is unclear how these changes will support domestic investment in chips production, as USTR claims."

Oxman further stated: “Since implementation, the tariffs have cumulatively cost American businesses and consumers $221 billion while failing to alter Chinese trade policies and practices of concern. With today’s announcement, USTR once again relies on the blunt and ineffective tool of tariffs with no support for their effectiveness. ITI calls on the administration to do right by Americans and take a more strategic approach to tariffs.”
