The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the winners of the 2024 Green Power Leadership Awards on September 17, honoring four organizations for their contributions to green power: Microsoft Corporation, MilliporeSigma, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, and Signature Aviation. These organizations have been recognized for their efforts in advancing green power procurement and demonstrating replicable projects that contribute to a pollution-free electricity sector.
Paul Gunning, Director of the Office of Atmospheric Protection, stated, "The 2024 Green Power Leadership Award winners have made outstanding strides in helping to encourage clean, renewable electricity in this country. Each year, we see increasingly impactful and sophisticated strategies from these leaders. EPA commends their commitment to powering their operations while curbing their emissions, protecting public health and the environment, and growing the green power market."
The Green Power Leadership Awards have acknowledged hundreds of organizations over more than two decades for their leadership in the green power marketplace. This year's recipients collectively use nearly 14 billion kilowatt-hours of green power annually—sufficient to power approximately 1.3 million average American homes for a year.
Microsoft Corporation is recognized for its large-scale procurement of green power and initiatives aimed at achieving 100% carbon-free energy consumption by 2030. The company used over 10 billion kWh of green power in 2024 and has partnered with an African American-owned solar development company on a significant solar project portfolio.
MilliporeSigma has been honored for its innovative procurement approach and employee engagement strategies. The company procures all its renewable energy through various supply options and encourages suppliers to adopt similar practices.
Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is noted for its comprehensive green power procurement strategy and educational initiatives that promote renewable energy among its visitors. The conservatory produces on-site solar photovoltaic arrays and wind turbines while matching electrification efforts with green power usage.
Signature Aviation has been recognized for its tiered strategy incorporating both on- and off-site renewable energy development. The company meets all its electricity needs through a geographically prioritized mixed portfolio while transitioning ground service equipment from diesel to electric or low-emitting technologies.
The Green Power Partnership program aims to increase the use of green power among U.S. organizations by advancing the market for such developments. As of 2022, nearly 700 partners were using almost 95 billion kWh of green power annually.
