French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné and U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken held a meeting in Paris on September 19, 2024, to discuss several pressing international issues.
Foreign Minister Séjourné opened the session with remarks on the critical global situations, including crises in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as preparations for the upcoming UN General Assembly. He stated, "Together, we are calling on all parties in the Middle East for a de-escalation." He emphasized that Lebanon could not withstand a total war and mentioned coordinated efforts with the United States to send messages of de-escalation.
On Ukraine, Séjourné highlighted ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent sanctions bypassing and reiterated France's commitment to supporting Ukraine until Russia ends its aggression. Additionally, he mentioned plans for an event focused on combating antisemitism and hate speech during the UN General Assembly, organized in coordination with UNESCO.
Secretary Blinken echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Franco-American unity in urging restraint and de-escalation in the Middle East, particularly regarding Lebanon. He noted ongoing efforts to secure a ceasefire for Gaza and expressed concern over escalating tensions between Hizballah and Israel since October 8th. Blinken stated that both nations seek a diplomatic resolution to create conditions allowing displaced populations to return home safely.
Regarding Ukraine, Blinken affirmed unwavering support from France and the United States against Russian aggression. He discussed collective efforts to help Ukraine achieve military, economic, and democratic stability. Blinken also pointed out actions taken against Iran for supplying ballistic missiles to Russia.
Both officials underscored their countries' collaboration at the UN General Assembly across various initiatives aimed at fostering progress and addressing global challenges. Blinken concluded by expressing confidence in the strength derived from Franco-American cooperation.
