Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III recently held a call with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant to discuss the ongoing exchange of fires between Israel and Iranian-backed Lebanese Hizballah. Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder provided a readout of the conversation.

During the call, Secretary Austin expressed support for Israel's right to defend itself amid Hizballah's increasing attacks into Israeli territory. He emphasized the need for a diplomatic solution that would enable residents on both sides of the border to return home safely and swiftly. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of reaching a Gaza ceasefire agreement to ensure all hostages are released.

"The Secretary made clear that the United States remains postured to protect U.S. forces and personnel and determined to deter any regional actors from exploiting the situation or expanding the conflict," said Maj. Gen. Ryder.

The discussion underscored the commitment of both nations to seek stability in the region while addressing immediate security concerns.
