United States hosts event addressing modern humanitarian challenges

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The United States, in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank, the United Kingdom, and the World Economic Forum, convened over 30 senior leaders on September 23, 2024. The gathering included representatives from governments, the United Nations, humanitarian and development actors, international financial institutions, civil society, the private sector, and formerly displaced individuals. The focus was on improving global humanitarian response amid rising forced displacement and unprecedented needs.

Participants emphasized the need to shift from government-funded efforts coordinated by the UN and international organizations to a more collaborative approach. This would involve development and private sector actors contributing their skills and resources to address both humanitarian and development goals. The urgency for global actors to form new partnerships, identify additional resources, find efficiencies, and create innovative solutions was highlighted.

The United States urged attendees to commit new resources for humanitarian crises; enhance coordination between humanitarian and development actors including multilateral development banks; promote market-driven solutions that generate sustainable social and economic benefits through private sector investment; and ensure local civil society actors such as refugees play a central role in decision-making.

Since 2021, the United States has provided over $52 billion in humanitarian assistance. It has also formed partnerships with private sector entities like the World Economic Forum’s Humanitarian and Resilience Investing Initiative and the Tent Partnership for Refugees. These efforts aim to sustainably respond to crises while promoting social and economic inclusion of displaced persons. The U.S. called on the international community to adopt similar measures with renewed commitment.
