Countries launch initiative supporting fissile material cut-off treaty

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

High-level representatives from several countries gathered on September 23, 2024, to launch the Friends of a Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty (FMCT) during the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week in New York. The event was attended by officials from Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Nigeria, the Philippines, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The participants reaffirmed their commitment to achieving a world without nuclear weapons. They emphasized that a non-discriminatory and verifiable treaty banning fissile material production for nuclear weapons would significantly contribute to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation efforts.

The group confirmed their intention to work together to maintain political attention on an FMCT. They aim to prevent a recurrence of a nuclear arms race and support immediate negotiations on an FMCT. They expect the Conference on Disarmament to prioritize this issue in its work.

The representatives welcomed current efforts such as voluntary moratoria on fissile material production for nuclear weapons and conversion of facilities for peaceful uses. These actions are seen as important interim steps pending an FMCT's entry into force. The group encouraged states to engage in transparency measures as called for by over 140 nations in UN General Assembly resolution 78/28 in 2023.

The Friends of FMCT remain open to working with other countries and partners to advance negotiations for an FMCT.
