U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello is set to travel to Nairobi and Addis Ababa, beginning on September 29. The visit aims to further diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in Sudan and engage with Sudanese refugees and civilian leaders on restoring a path to an inclusive democratic future.
Building on the momentum from the UN General Assembly’s High-Level Week, Perriello will meet with key officials from organizations such as the African Union (AU) and Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). He will also engage with Sudanese civil society and international NGO leaders focused on humanitarian support and civilian protection.
The Special Envoy's mission includes advancing an inclusive process for Sudan’s transition to civilian governance. These consultations aim to inform ongoing diplomatic efforts to press the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) into agreeing on humanitarian pauses that could lead to a comprehensive cessation of hostilities and expanded humanitarian access.
"The United States stands with the Sudanese people and their aspirations for peace, freedom, and justice," said Perriello. "We call for the SAF and RSF to end the violence, remove all barriers to addressing humanitarian needs, famine conditions, and gender-based violence, and respect the laws of war regarding civilian protection."
