Senator Ed Markey has introduced the Artificial Intelligence Civil Rights Act of 2024. The legislation aims to address biases and ensure transparency in AI systems used in decision-making processes that affect individuals' rights, civil liberties, and livelihoods.
Caitriona Fitzgerald, Deputy Director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), expressed support for the bill. "Artificial intelligence systems are being developed and deployed in opaque and unaccountable ways that are harming individuals and exacerbating biases. Senator Markey’s Artificial Intelligence Civil Rights Act of 2024 puts critical guardrails in place to ensure automated decision-making is fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory. EPIC is proud to support this legislation," she said.
The act seeks to implement measures that would make AI systems more accountable and reduce discriminatory practices by making their operations more transparent.
