The Department of Defense has announced $43 million in awards to 112 university researchers through the Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP). These grants will enable the purchase of major equipment at 64 institutions across 28 states for Fiscal Year 2025, enhancing their capabilities in defense-related research.

The DURIP program is part of the Department's strategic investment in the U.S. scientific ecosystem. It equips universities to conduct advanced research that strengthens the nation's technological edge and supports the development of a future workforce skilled in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This year's funding will support equipment and instrumentation for basic research in areas prioritized by the Department of Defense, including quantum computing, photonics, human performance, autonomy, and novel materials design and characterization.

"DURIP awards build vital research infrastructure, advancing the exploration of novel ideas and upholding the cutting-edge capabilities of our academic institutions," said Dr. Bindu Nair, director of the Basic Research Office in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering. "This funding helps guarantee the enduring scientific excellence of our universities, nurtures the development of the next STEM workforce, and catalyzes scientific innovations that will revolutionize military capabilities in the years ahead."

The program is administered through a merit-based competition by three military service research offices: Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Army Research Office, and Office of Naval Research. The annual program seeks specific proposals from university investigators conducting foundational science and engineering research with national defense implications.

Awards are contingent upon successful negotiations between military service research offices and academic institutions.

More information about winning proposals can be downloaded online.
