The Government of the United States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at promoting, supporting, and empowering women and girls globally. This agreement underscores their commitment to strengthening Women, Peace, and Security efforts; promoting women's economic empowerment; and addressing issues such as gender-based violence, countering violent extremism, and elevating women's leadership in OIC Member States.
Dr. Geeta Rao Gupta, U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues from the U.S. Department of State, signed the MOU on behalf of the United States. Ambassador Tarig Ali Bakheet, Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian, Cultural and Social Affairs, signed on behalf of the OIC in Washington, D.C.
"The MOU reflects our shared desire to strengthen Women, Peace and Security efforts; promote women’s economic empowerment; and address the crosscutting issues of preventing and responding to gender-based violence," stated Dr. Gupta.
Ambassador Bakheet emphasized that "the MOU confirms our shared vision for more inclusive, resilient, safe and rights-respecting communities."
This agreement is part of an ongoing effort by the current administration to promote the rights and empowerment of women and girls through U.S. foreign policy.
