An aircrew from the Yuma Air Branch collaborated with U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Yuma Sector earlier this week to assist a group of migrants in distress in the Sonoran Desert. The incident began when U.S. Border Patrol agents in Ajo, Arizona, were alerted to activity within the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge on Monday evening. Wellton Station agents were informed about five individuals in distress south of Sentinel, Arizona.
A tracking operation was initiated with support from an aircrew from Yuma's Air Branch. Agents followed a signal fire overnight south of the Granite Mountains and located some members of the group, who reported leaving another member behind whom they claimed had died. Additional resources, including Yuma Sector’s Mobile Response Team and Border Patrol Search, Trauma and Rescue unit, were activated for rescue operations.
During these efforts, agents found a 14-year-old suffering from extreme dehydration and provided emergency medical care while requesting an air ambulance. Pilots from the Arizona Department of Public Safety responded to a nearby location as agents transported the migrant down from the mountainside. An Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter crew then extracted him and took him to a hospital for advanced medical care.
Continuing patrols led Yuma Air Branch pilots to locate a fifth migrant showing signs of distress. The AS350 aircrew returned to pick up an agent certified as an Emergency Medical Technician and landed near this individual to provide medical assistance for dehydration before transporting him to Wellton Station.
The Mexican Consulate has been notified about this incident, and all five migrants have received treatment and are considered healthy enough for processing under removal proceedings.
Douglas Murray, Yuma Air Branch Director stated: “We work closely with our partner agencies... Every scenario presents its own unique set of challenges." He emphasized collaboration among parties involved in resolving such incidents regardless of their outcomes.
Yuma Sector Chief Patrol Agent Sean McGoffin remarked: “As is evidenced by this case when migrants cross the border illegally they put their lives in peril regardless... Far too many people making similar treks have died due to dehydration or heat stroke."
