A year has passed since the terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which marked a significant tragedy in Israel's history. On this day, Hamas attacked during the Jewish holy day of Simchat Torah, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 civilians, including over 40 American citizens. Additionally, 251 individuals were taken hostage, among them 12 Americans. The United States Department of Defense reflects on this somber anniversary with a statement from Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III.
Secretary Austin expressed solidarity with the people of Israel and the families affected by the attacks. "We mourn with the people of Israel and with the families of those slain by Hamas—and we stand with the families still working with such courage to free their loved ones from Hamas captivity," he stated.
The Department of Defense remains committed to ensuring the safety of American citizens. Secretary Austin emphasized remembrance for those who lost their lives due to these acts, mentioning specifically Itay Chen, Gad Haggai, Judy Weinstein Haggai, and Hersh Goldberg-Polin. He affirmed that their memories would drive continued efforts to secure the release of all hostages.
Austin highlighted actions taken under President Biden's direction to support Israel's defense and deter further aggression from Iran and its allies. This includes increased security assistance to Israel and additional military deployments in the Middle East. U.S. forces have coordinated efforts with Israeli forces against missile threats from Iran.
The statement also addressed civilian casualties in Gaza caused by Hamas using civilians as shields and underscored international responsibilities during armed conflicts. Austin reiterated discussions held with Israeli leaders about protecting Palestinian civilians as both a moral duty and strategic necessity.
Reflecting on future prospects for Israelis and Palestinians, Austin advocated for a two-state solution as part of broader regional normalization efforts involving Arab-Israeli relations.
In closing his statement, Secretary Austin offered prayers for those affected by the events on October 7th and emphasized ongoing work towards achieving peace through ceasefire agreements and humanitarian aid initiatives.
