The United States has imposed sanctions on Algoney Hamdan Daglo Musa, a senior leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan. The sanctions target his involvement in acquiring weapons and military equipment for the RSF, which have been used in ongoing operations, including an assault on El Fasher, North Darfur's capital.
Algoney's actions are linked to fueling the conflict and supporting atrocities against civilians, encompassing war crimes, crimes against humanity, and ethnic cleansing. Despite warnings from the U.S. and other international partners, the RSF and allied militias continue to commit serious violations, such as sexual violence and ethnically targeted attacks on non-Arab groups.
The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF has resulted in significant devastation. Tens of thousands have died, with over 11 million displaced internally or externally. The Sudanese population is calling for peace, justice, and a return to civilian governance.
This sanction is part of ongoing efforts by the United States to hold accountable those responsible for perpetuating this conflict. The U.S. government remains committed to using available tools to support peace processes and impose consequences on individuals contributing to instability.
The Department of Treasury executed these actions under Executive Order 14098 titled "Imposing Sanctions on Certain Persons Destabilizing Sudan and Undermining the Goal of a Democratic Transition." Further details can be found in Treasury’s press release.
