At a White House event, Domestic Policy Advisor Neera Tanden announced that the National Partnership for Student Success (NPSS) has surpassed President Biden's goal of recruiting 250,000 new tutors, mentors, and student success coaches by summer 2025. As of the end of the 2023-2024 school year, over 320,000 adults have taken on these roles in schools.
Neera Tanden stated, "Since Day One, President Biden and Vice President Harris have been laser focused on ensuring the academic success of every student." She highlighted the achievement as a result of a call to action from President Biden in his 2022 State of the Union Address.
U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona emphasized the importance of having trusted adults in students' lives: "When young people have trusted adults who they can count on in their life, they’re more likely to do better in school."
Michael D. Smith, CEO of AmeriCorps, commented on the significance of exceeding this recruitment goal: "The surpassing of President Biden’s call is a clear indicator of the strength of the American spirit and our collective dedication to the future of our youth."
Researchers from Johns Hopkins University's Everyone Graduates Center released a report showing that during the 2023-24 school year alone, 136,000 adults provided tutoring and mentoring services. This builds upon an earlier effort where 187,000 individuals took up similar roles during the previous school year.
The NPSS is a public-private partnership launched in response to President Biden's call for increased support for students recovering from pandemic impacts. The initiative involves over 200 organizations working together to provide evidence-based student supports.
In continuing efforts to support this momentum, several initiatives were announced:
- A third community collaboration challenge microgrant cycle supported by Leon Lowenstein Foundation.
- A new tool by National Student Support Accelerator for evaluating tutoring programs.
- City Year published a Student Success Coaching Playbook.
- The NPSS Support Hub will release a training resource library with materials developed by MENTOR.
