The U.S. Department of Labor has unveiled a set of Artificial Intelligence Best Practices aimed at ensuring that AI technologies enhance job quality and benefit workers in the workplace. This initiative builds on the department's AI and Worker Well-being: Principles for Developers and Employers, released under President Biden’s Executive Order concerning the development and use of AI.

Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su emphasized the importance of using AI to promote equality and improve job quality. "We have a shared responsibility to ensure that AI is used to expand equality, advance equity, develop opportunity and improve job quality," she stated. Su highlighted that these Best Practices serve as a guide for businesses to responsibly implement AI while supporting their workforce.

The guidelines focus on various strategies, including ethical development of AI standards, ensuring human oversight in employment decisions, transparency with workers regarding AI usage, involving workers in decision-making processes related to AI, protecting labor rights, providing training for workers on AI systems, and safeguarding worker data.

The Department of Labor is also committed to applying these principles within its own operations. The department plans to continue engaging with companies, unions, workers, and other stakeholders to protect and empower workers as AI becomes more prevalent in workplaces.

A virtual event discussing these initiatives was scheduled for October 16 at 3:30 p.m. EDT.
