The governments of the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Korea, and the United Kingdom have released a joint statement announcing the establishment of a Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team. This initiative aims to uphold international peace and security by addressing threats from North Korea's weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs.
The statement highlights that these programs violate UN Security Council resolutions. In response to the disbandment of the UN Security Council’s 1718 Committee Panel of Experts earlier this year due to a veto, these nations have decided to form a new monitoring team. The Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team will focus on observing and reporting any violations or evasions of sanctions imposed by relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
The participating countries emphasize their commitment to fully implementing these resolutions concerning North Korea. They also reiterate that dialogue remains an open path and urge all states to contribute to global efforts in maintaining international peace and security against ongoing threats from North Korea.
