U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Champlain Port of Entry have intercepted a stolen vehicle driven by a U.S. citizen. The incident occurred when officers encountered a 2002 Chevrolet Astro van attempting to enter the United States. The driver, a 36-year-old male, had no intention of traveling to Canada and performed a U-turn before crossing.

Upon inspection, CBP officers noticed anomalies and escorted the vehicle and its driver to a secondary inspection area for further examination. During this process, they discovered a loaded Ruger rifle along with 70 rounds of ammunition inside the vehicle. Further investigation in collaboration with New York state troopers revealed that the vehicle had been recently reported as stolen.

Steve Bronson, Area Port Director, commented on the situation: “Our dedicated officers continue to intercept criminal activity to keep our communities and country safe.” He credited their skills, experience, and strong relationships with local law enforcement for their success.

Following standard procedures, the driver, along with the rifle, ammunition, and stolen vehicle were handed over to New York State Police where he faces felony charges of criminal possession of stolen property.

CBP is recognized as America's frontline defense as it is both the nation's largest law enforcement organization and the world's first unified border management agency. The agency's mission includes protecting America across various terrains while facilitating safe travel and trade.
