Employees and management at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) have reached their first labor contract, as announced jointly today. EFF employees have joined the Engineers and Scientists of California Local 20, IFPTE.

The bargaining unit at EFF includes over 60 non-management employees across various teams within the organization’s program and administrative staff. The new contract addresses a range of subjects such as compensation, health insurance, benefits, time off, working conditions, nondiscrimination, accommodation and diversity, hiring practices, union rights, among others.

"EFF is its people. From the moment that our staff decided to organize, we were supportive and approached these negotiations with a commitment to enshrining the best of our practices and adopting improvements through open and honest discussions,” said Cindy Cohn, Executive Director of EFF. “We are delighted that we were able to reach a contract that will ensure our team receives the wages, benefits, and protections they deserve as they continue to advance our mission of ensuring that technology supports freedom, justice and innovation for all people of the world.”

Shirin Mori from the EFF Workers Union negotiating team expressed satisfaction with the collaboration: “We’re pleased to have partnered with EFF management in crafting a contract that helps our colleagues thrive both at work and outside of work,” Mori stated. “This contract is a testament to creative solutions to improve working conditions and benefits across the organization while also safeguarding the things employees love about working at EFF. We deeply appreciate the positive working relationship with management in establishing a strong contract.”

The three-year agreement was unanimously ratified by EFF’s board of directors on September 18th and by 96 percent of the bargaining unit on September 25th. It takes effect from October 1st, 2024 through September 30th, 2027.

EFF is recognized as one of the largest nonprofit organizations defending civil liberties in the digital realm since its founding in 1990. The organization advocates for user privacy, free expression, and innovation through various means including impact litigation and policy analysis.

The Engineers and Scientists of California Local 20 represents over 8,000 professionals including engineers and scientists throughout Northern California across multiple sectors such as healthcare providers like Kaiser Permanente.
