FTC issues final click-to-cancel rules amid CCIA's concerns

Today, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) released its final Negative Option Rules, commonly referred to as "Click-to-Cancel." These rules introduce new requirements for sellers offering subscription services online. The Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA) had previously commented on these proposed rules in June 2023, voicing concerns about their alignment with federal law and lack of support by the record.

Stephanie Joyce, CCIA Senior Vice President and Chief of Staff, provided a statement on the matter: "CCIA has always supported rules ensuring that consumers have clear disclosures and reasonable means of terminating subscription arrangements. We are concerned that these amended Click-to-Cancel Rules are born of a flawed process and in many ways duplicate existing laws that have successfully protected consumers for decades. The unfortunate result might be confusion and complication for sellers, consumers, and courts, which would benefit no one."
