His widow, Monica Epling, recalls how her husband went to work despite being ill because "his fellow agents needed help."
Epling's sacrifice left a profound impact on his family. Monica was left to raise their three sons alone, with another child on the way. Determined that her children would not suffer a similar fate as their father, she ensured they learned water safety. This decision set Shaine Casas on a path that led him to become an accomplished swimmer and represent the U.S. at the Paris Olympics.
Casas reflects on his father's influence: "It was destiny, for sure," he said about how the tragedy shaped his life. Although he did not make it to the finals in Paris, he is determined to compete again in Los Angeles in 2028.
James Epling's legacy also extends beyond his immediate family. Seth Epling, who only has memories shared by others about his father, is now serving as a sergeant in the U.S. Marines and plans to join Border Patrol after completing his enlistment. "He went into the river to save people... It proves what kind of a man he was," Seth remarked.
Epling's colleagues remember him fondly as well. Tom Ramsey describes him as someone who would "give you the shirt off his back." Tyler Emblem recalls searching for Epling during those cold December days: "When it's someone in uniform, it's a whole different level."
The incident has had lasting effects on Border Patrol practices concerning water safety and search operations. Emblem noted that lessons learned from that day have contributed to saving lives since then.
Monica Epling sees her husband's spirit living on through her sons' service and choices: "I have no doubt that [that service] was from what they saw growing up." Her family's history of service includes several members who have served in military and law enforcement roles.
Greg Solis, a childhood friend of Casas and now a Border Patrol agent himself, draws inspiration from Epling's story as he serves in Laredo, Texas. He hopes one day to join the Search and Rescue team like James aspired to do.
