On October 1, CDT Europe, in collaboration with over 40 civil society organizations, co-hosted the Tech and Society Summit in Brussels. The event served as a platform for nonprofit organizations to address issues such as digital rights, climate action, corporate accountability, and social justice. It facilitated dialogue between lawmakers and civil society groups.

Several Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and EU officials attended the summit. After introductory remarks from the co-hosts, participants engaged in discussions and roundtables aimed at developing accountable policies that promote digital rights.

Asha Allen, Secretary General of CDT Europe, participated in a roundtable discussing how civil society can support EU institutions. She highlighted the role of civil society in identifying harms and proposing policy solutions. This session provided an opportunity to exchange lessons learned regarding civil society participation in policymaking and enforcement of EU laws.

CDT Europe also took part in two other roundtables: one on spyware regulation due to its risks to fundamental rights and another on creating an effective EU digital enforcement strategy.

Participants could engage with experts at Action Desks—interactive spaces offering personalized support for challenges. CDT Europe was active at the Antispyware Clinic where Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline provided mobile security checks.

During the summit, CDT Europe launched a new alliance called the Spyware Coordination Group. This coalition unites 15 leading civil society and journalism organizations to combat spyware abuse across the EU.

The dialogues initiated at this summit are important for expanding civic space and fostering collaboration across sectors to ensure meaningful participation in policymaking. As technology continues to shape our lives, it is crucial to work towards a future prioritizing justice, safety, and security for people and the planet.
