The United States has extended congratulations to the people of Moldova for their participation in the recent presidential election and referendum on EU accession. According to the U.S., Moldovans turned out in record numbers, making their voices heard despite challenges.
The Moldovan government and the Central Election Commission were commended for managing a competitive election process, even amid significant attempts by Russia to compromise its integrity. The OSCE/ODIHR Observation Mission noted these efforts.
Russia was accused of trying to disrupt the election through various means, including illicit financing, vote buying, disinformation campaigns, and cyber activities aimed at undermining Moldova's democracy. In response to these actions, a majority of Moldovans voted in favor of amending their constitution to further pursue EU accession.
Looking forward to the runoff presidential election scheduled for November 3, concerns persist regarding potential Russian interference. The United States expressed apprehension that Russia might again attempt to obstruct Moldovans from exercising their sovereign rights.
