The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced a significant investment in water infrastructure as part of the Biden-Harris administration's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. This initiative aims to enhance water systems and ensure safety across various communities.
In fiscal year 2025, the EPA will allocate $6.2 billion towards upgrading water infrastructure nationwide. This funding is distributed through the Clean Water and Drinking Water State Revolving Funds, which are designed to provide low-interest loans for state-run projects addressing critical water infrastructure needs.
Kansas will receive nearly $33 million from this allocation, with specific funds directed towards clean water general supplemental initiatives, emerging contaminant concerns, and drinking water challenges. Governor Laura Kelly emphasized that this funding will improve access to safe drinking water for Kansans.
EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan highlighted the importance of these investments: "Water keeps us healthy, sustains vibrant communities and dynamic ecosystems, and supports economic opportunity." He noted that the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law represents a historic investment aimed at addressing diverse challenges like lead contamination and sewer overflows.
Region 7 Administrator Meghan A. McCollister expressed optimism about the benefits for communities with aging infrastructure: "Communities across our region with aging water infrastructure and contamination concerns will benefit from this funding."
This effort aligns with the Biden-Harris administration’s Justice40 Initiative, aiming to ensure that 40% of federal investment benefits reach disadvantaged communities. The EPA's Water Technical Assistance program further supports these goals by helping communities plan upgrades and secure necessary funding.
