In 2024, the State Department set a new record in U.S. passport processing for the third consecutive fiscal year. The department issued approximately 24.5 million passport books and cards, surpassing last year's figures by half a million.
The department has also enhanced the efficiency of the passport application process. The current service commitment for routine passport applications is now four to six weeks.
A significant development is the Online Passport Renewal (OPR) system, fully launched in September. Over one million Americans have used this system to renew their passports securely from home, without mailing documents. This modernization aims to improve government services for Americans.
These initiatives aim to enhance the efficiency, equity, and accessibility of the passport application process. They also support America's economic growth by facilitating international travel for business and investment purposes.
Looking ahead, six new passport facilities are planned for Utah, Florida, Kansas, Texas, Ohio, and North Carolina. These facilities will reduce travel time for Americans needing passport appointments and other services.
