Chairman John Moolenaar has expressed serious concerns following reports that chips manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC) have been used in Huawei's artificial intelligence accelerators. This development is seen as a significant breach of U.S. export controls.
Moolenaar stated, "Reports that cutting-edge TSMC-manufactured chips have contributed to Huawei’s AI development represent a catastrophic failure of US export control policy." He emphasized the importance of these AI accelerators in the ongoing technology competition with China and warned of potential national security implications.
He further stressed the need for immediate action, saying, "Congress needs immediate answers from both BIS and TSMC about the scope and volume of this disaster. The U.S. government must take immediate steps to ensure this does not happen again."
The situation calls for urgent attention from relevant authorities to address and prevent future occurrences.
