The United States has imposed sanctions on Mirghani Idris Suleiman, a senior leader of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). Idris serves as the Director General of the Defense Industries System, which is recognized by the U.S. as SAF's primary weapons production and procurement arm. He has been involved in efforts to acquire weapons and expand military operations.
The SAF has focused on acquiring weapons, including drones from Iran and Russia, instead of pursuing peace. This includes an exchange agreement with Russia involving ports for weapons, intensifying their conflict with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The ongoing war has resulted in widespread civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure. Over 11 million people have been displaced, and more than 21 million face severe hunger. The Sudanese population seeks peace, justice, and a return to civilian governance.
This action follows previous sanctions imposed on October 8 against RSF senior leader Algoney Hamdan Daglo Musa. These measures are part of ongoing efforts to hold accountable those responsible for perpetuating the conflict. The United States remains committed to using available tools to advocate for peace and impose consequences on individuals contributing to the suffering in Sudan.
The Department of the Treasury executed these actions under Executive Order 14098, "Imposing Sanctions on Certain Persons Destabilizing Sudan and Undermining the Goal of a Democratic Transition," as amended. Further details can be found in Treasury’s press release.
