Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Jose W. Fernandez led the fifth U.S.-Taiwan Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue (EPPD) on October 23, 2024. The event was held virtually from Washington, D.C., under the auspices of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO).

The dialogue included representatives from both the Department of State and the International Development Finance Corporation. Participants engaged with TECRO Representative Alexander Tah-Ray Yui, Minister of Economic Affairs Jyh-Huei Kuo, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Remus Chen, among others. Simultaneously, Robert Garverick, Deputy Assistant Secretary (DAS) at the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs, led a U.S. delegation to Taiwan from October 21-24 to support discussions.

The dialogue aimed to enhance economic cooperation between the United States and Taiwan. Key topics included addressing economic coercion, improving supply chain resilience and investment opportunities, tackling tax-related barriers to boost investment between both nations, and ensuring a secure energy transition aligned with Taiwan’s NetZero 2050 goals.

Both parties emphasized progress made over the past year while exploring new areas for collaboration such as transportation initiatives, green climate projects, infrastructure development with regional partners, information sharing, and fostering mutual understanding.

The inaugural EPPD took place in November 2020 under AIT and TECRO's guidance to promote collaboration on various economic issues.
